About this policy

Embracing AI.
Protecting our standards.

Artificial intelligence offers new possibilities for health sciences education, research and administration. FUHSA’s policy establishes how these tools can support university work while preserving original thinking, scientific accuracy and professional responsibility.

The framework applies to undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers, and academic and non-academic staff across the university. It covers acceptable assistance, prohibited practices, declarations of AI use, oversight and supporting guidance.

This page provides a reading guide to the supplied policy. Consult the full document below for the complete wording, requirements and appendices.

Understand your responsibilities

One framework.
A shared commitment.

AI should strengthen your work while leaving its intellectual direction and accountability with you.

Part A / Students

Learn with AI. Think for yourself.

  • Supportive use: outlines, grammar refinement, literature exploration and coding assistance for data organisation.
  • Original work: the policy sets a maximum AI-assisted threshold of 30%. Clinical reasoning and scientific interpretation must remain human-led.
  • Prohibited use: generated clinical diagnoses or treatment plans in case studies, fabricated patient or laboratory data, AI-written submissions presented as original work, and false references.
  • Declare your use: every submission requires an AI Transparency Statement, including when no AI was used.

Part B / Staff

Lead by example.

  • Teaching: AI can help with visual aids, simulations and slide formatting. Teaching materials require meaningful human review and local context.
  • Research: AI may assist language editing and data visualisation. Methodology, results and discussion must remain the researcher’s original work.
  • Assessment: AI can support objective grading; final grades and feedback for clinical essays, theses and projects remain the human instructor’s responsibility.
  • Transparency: staff must declare AI use in annual progress reports, university research grant applications and internal course manuals.

Principles in practice

Three responsibilities to carry
into every use of AI.

01 / PROTECT

Keep sensitive data private.

The policy prohibits uploading identifiable patient records, clinical images, sensitive university data and other protected information to public AI tools. Confidential peer-review manuscripts must also remain protected.

02 / VERIFY

Check the evidence.

Verify AI-assisted information, medical terminology and references against reliable sources. The author remains responsible for clinical and scientific accuracy; fabricated citations and data are unacceptable.

03 / DISCLOSE

Make assistance visible.

Name the AI tool and explain how it contributed. Keep drafts and version history to demonstrate the development of your work, and be prepared to explain your reasoning in your own words.

Read the policy’s FAQs →
What does the 30% threshold mean?

The policy limits AI-assisted academic output to 30%, with AI serving a supporting role. Its assessment combines detection tools, similarity indices and disclosure checks. This is not permission to outsource core clinical reasoning, fabricate evidence or present AI-generated work as your own.

Can I use AI to improve my writing?

Yes. The policy permits grammar correction, linguistic refinement and structural outlining. You must maintain original authorship, verify the content and disclose the assistance.

Can AI translate my notes?

The policy’s FAQ permits translation, including Hausa to English. You must check the accuracy of the final medical terminology and include the required AI declaration.

What should an AI declaration include?

Identify yourself, state whether AI was used, name the tool and describe its purpose. Confirm compliance with the policy’s threshold and accept responsibility for accuracy. Appendix V contains the institution’s declaration form.

What happens if work exceeds the limit?

The policy provides for revision and a formal warning for minor breaches above 30% and below 50%. Work exceeding 50% or containing synthetic patient data is treated as academic fraud, with a failing grade and disciplinary referral. Students may contest a detection flag using version history or handwritten drafts.

Does the policy also cover staff?

Yes. Part B addresses teaching, research, assessment, confidentiality and disclosure. Staff publications are subject to a 30% AI-generated threshold, excluding references and citations, and staff remain accountable for their work.
